A year in the making, Strand is the third release from veteran Pittsburgh quintet Left on Dorris. With the help of engineer/producer Matt Harrington, the band has created a dynamic and eclectic modern rock record that maintains the melodic hooks that it's fans have come to expect. 'This band thrives on writing great songs and we hope that some of the tunes are something that people can latch on to. We live to play rock and roll,' says Martin McKay, the band's ambitious singer/songwriter/guitarist. McKay, along with guitarist Bob Boyd, drummer Dan Boyd, and bassist Sean Weida, form the core of LOD, and have been playing together since 1996. The newest member of the band, vocalist Stacy Pomroy, joined partway through the Strand sessions and has added the strong vocal harmonies and counter-melodies that reinforce the emotional intensity of the record. It is difficult to draw comparisons with other bands when listening to Strand, as a whole. Matt Harrington of Soundscape Studios says that it is easier to draw comparisons on a song-to-song basis. 'On the song level, some sound like Fleetwood Mac, while others sound like Train. It is truly an eclectic collection.' Fusing elements of folk, country, and progressive rock into a strong collection of songs, the material on Strand is more dynamic and edgier in nature than the folky pop-rock featured on the band's first two recordings. Calling on influences from Counting Crows to Dream Theater, Rush to The Old 97s, and Simon and Garfunkel to Toad the Wet Sprocket, Left on Dorris fuses their influences to create a moody, dynamic inspirational spirit within their music and lyrics. The songs help recall or invent new images by painting pictures through sonic story-telling. Strand is a record that grabs your attention from the start, yet has more than enough depth to hold your interest well beyond the first listen.
