Lick : No Love
Based in San Francisco, Lick have been performing their original brand of alt-metal to enthusiastic crowds since 2005. Lick create a Deftones-meets-Portishead-meets-Rage Against the Machine vibe through soulful, powerhouse vocals and alt-rock sensibilities over a jazz-metal foundation. Sure, they have a lot of rock-metal fans, but it's amazing to watch their enormous energy and sound win over those who normally listen to pop, punk, indy, screamo, arena rock or even jazz. No Love is Lick's first full release. The album juxtaposes beautifully Campbell's radiant voice that goes from fury to whispers in an instant, over raging but thoughtful guitar and bass, grounded by bold, distinctive drums. The track "Lambs to Lions" is a brilliant mixture of heavy-pocketed music, blended with powerfully expressive voice. The title track "No Love" is a fan favorite and requested often. Critic David de Young says, "Lick kicks you in the gut from the first chord." Right off it's clear: Lick is taking alt-metal in a new direction, many are soon to follow.
