Garden of Dreams
Let's start with a little History: July-2004- Keyboardist Carl 'the robot' Bessette moves from Rhode Island to the Portland OR area working for Intel. Here he meets an aspiring young singer Lisbet 'LP' Vargas (orginally from New York City),with her beautiful voice and stunning features. As good friends do, robot encourages LP to begin writing down her feelings into song lyrics as a better way of expressing herself. The result is a constant flow of expressive lyrics that are beautifully sung from the heart. Coupled with robot's latin jazz influenced grooves, the album can transport the listener to an exotic location, inspire, or uplift the spirits of a willing ear. Working together, their colaborative efforts have yeilded many originals and breathed new life into a few remakes with their own unique signature. 'Garden of Dreams' is inspired by a friend's painting's (of the same name). Originally painted as an illustation for a children's book about a girl who finds a humming bird and discovers a secret place of magic and mystery, 'Garden of Dreams' is now brought to musical life. Opening with harp arpeggios and sounds of nature, the song begins to weave a violin section arpeggio with a grooving frettless bass. Soon joined by a classical nylon stringed guitar (the girl) and flute (the bird) move about the garden. The forces of nature are animated by LP's 4 part chorusing harmony. Delving into uncharted territory for LP and the Robot, 'I Can't Sleep' is a complete diversion. A soulful horn popping, organ smearing piece seasoned with great harmonies sure to keep you up all night. One of the finer examples of their work is the track 'Unbroken'. Dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, 'Unbroken' was written by LP after watching the heartbreaking stories on the evening news. Moved by the emotional lyrics, Carl immeadiatly went to work scoring the orchestration. The result is truly an honest, genuine and beautiful song. On the lighter side is a song inspired by a dream. 'Blue World' was literally written minutes after robot woke up with this Latin jazz melody haunting his mind. The addition of LP's sensual and unusual tenor harmonies make 'Blue World' a relaxing and exotic diversion. Following the introduction (reminiscent of the song 'Watermellon Man'), Blue world jaunters on with piano, a ghostly alto sax, barking bari-sax and flugel horn. Layered in synth atmospheres, the song builds energy while jazz guitar tones fill out the rhythm. 'Secret Lust' was the duo's 1st success, fusing LP's Dominican Latin flavor with robot's love for jazz and especially sambas. His favorite artists Vince Guraldi, Bob James and Joe Sample are among the driving influences in robot's playing style. 'Chosen One' - is a prime example of music writen from the heart. It is about the best stage of love; when you are free from your past, and in walks the new love of your life. This song opens with a simple guitar arppegio, followed by a the gentle pulse of analog horns and strings. It is a simple but beautiful ballad, that reminds us all of that special feeling! 'Latina Picante' '- is another dream inspired tune. As LP's biography and signature song, she gives the song a special energy and genuine Latin flair. Filled with imagery and island rhythms, Latina Picante is as Hot and Spicey as it's namesake 'LP'!!!
