Tribute to Moses Hogan
One year before the untimely death of Moses Hogan in 2003, I had the privilege of hearing the wonderful Moses Hogan Singers perform in concert under his direction. This was truly one of the most overwhelming choral performances that I have experienced. This thrilling musical experience was further enhanced when I was given the opportunity to meet Mr. Hogan and express my appreciation for his great arrangements AND convey my interest in performing them. Moses Hogan, a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a student of the Julliard School was truly dedicated to the preservation of the music of the slave. At a time when black musical culture was being consumed with gospel, rap, and hip-hop, this talented young pianist and composer decided to focus his efforts on the Negro Spiritual. It is with great honor and humility that I present this tribute to the Spiritual arrangements of Moses Hogan. - Lucy Kinchen.
