Product Notes

Twilight Waltz is the debut solo record from acclaimed Minneapolis singer-songwriter Luke Zimmerman. A talented wordsmith, Zimmerman has been compared to some of popular music's most enduring and venerated artists. Seamlessly blending country, jazz and rock, Twilight Waltz marks a leap forward in the 27-year old's artistic development. With overtones that ache of deserted fields and industrial back roads, the record coherently straddles the lines between heartache and longing, disappointment and optimism, harmony and disharmony. Born and raised around Minneapolis, Minnesota, Zimmerman was reared on music. A classical pianist in his early days, he soon became more interested in drawing and painting than music, graduating college with a degree in Studio Art. Soon after, Zimmerman co-founded The Crow River Band. Co-produced by Randy Casey, who also contributed lead guitar tracks, and released in January 2003, The Crow River Band's self-titled album contained a mix of late-60's Europop, country, alt-country and blues-rock, all tied together with Zimmerman's facile wit, intelligent rambling, and heart-on-your-sleeve realism. In the summer of 2003, the band fell apart. Continuing to play shows as a duo with drummer Andy Hertel, Zimmerman wrote the songs that would become Twilight Waltz. With Hertel, Zimmerman returned to the studio in October 2003, again co-producing with Randy Casey. Filling out his studio band were Minneapolis pros Steve Price on bass and Peter J. Sands of the Honeydogs on keys. This began a two year odyssey in and out of the studio, where life events and musical analogies blurred into one, and often times the players weren't sure if art was imitating life or vice versa. Early praise for Twilight Waltz: 'In a tour de force, Zimmerman successfully weaves the instrumental aspects and lyrical aspects of his music into a harmonious fabric where both musical elements play off each other in a balanced, sophisticated, and impressive manner that invokes thoughts and emotions that only the most talented musicians can coerce to surface.' -- Madison, WI Mendota Beacon, 4/28/05 'It should be just a matter of time before the 27-year-old is getting mileage out of his own name with a new 10-song record...The music is a cross-breed of the lazy rock of Neil Young and the smart sorrowfulness that Lou Reed and Johnny Cash couldn't keep out of their songs...The record is full of songs that sort out relationship baggage and give telltale glimpses into relationships that will crash and burn.'  -- Ames, IA Tribune, 6/8/05   '[Luke Zimmerman] is set to release [his] debut independent album 'Twilight Waltz' later this fall. The album's 10 original songs are an honest, heady mix of alt-country that combine the familiar sounds of Reed's art-rock, John Lennon's pop, and Neil Young's rustic folk-rock.' -- Des Moines, IA Cityview, 6/9/05.
