Product Notes

From the liner notes to Mac Cherry's 'Right Guy Wrong Planet': These are songs pulled with little design on continuity from the last decade or more. My good friend Andy Nelson gave me the opportunity to record in earnest and when I sat down, these are the ones that came out first. The fact that anyone with a computer and fingers can pop out a CD these days does not in the least diminish the pleasure I've had to have gone through this process and come out on the other side with a finished piece of work. As a kid I thought that there were few things on the planet more sacrosanct than the sound inside the grooves on a record album. We used to hold the old vinyl discs with the edges in the center of our palms to keep them from getting scratched or in some way disfigured. They were gently placed on the turntable, and with a firm and steady hand tended to with whatever newest technological cleaning device was available, then the same resolute attention was given the stylus and then... then... The sound drifted through the room like smoke from a blown out candle. The one voice harmony of Lennon and McCartney, the black and white street funk of Steely Dan and Sly Stone, the ragged genius of Bob Dylan. Nobody I knew had 80 band EQ's or compressors or sub woofers... but the sound has never gotten sweeter. It was way back then that I determined to be a part of this expression. If it's whittling a bird out of a piece of bass wood or designing the Guggenheim Museum, there's something significant about investing of yourself in a piece of art. The return on that investment is in the doing as well as the opportunity to share it with someone like you and somehow, just the fact that you're reading this, that you listened to this, proves that I was here... maybe that's why they used to call them records. --- About Mac Cherry: Mac Cherry and his family live on a few acres outside Alma, Wisconsin. He's the father of five, an area musician and owner/operator of Big River Theater Company in downtown Alma. He's been a member of the eight piece band Section 8 since 1992 and a songwriter since they invented the pencil. His musical influences range from the Beatles to Steely Dan to early Motown to Frank and Tony. He was born in Minneapolis and his family moved to Milwaukee in his pre-teens. After Milwaukee he lived in Iowa long enough to realize that his favorite part of Iowa was the state line and he crossed it at his earliest opportunity. It was back to Milwaukee, then back to Minneapolis then finally to the idyllic country confines of rural Buffalo County where you might find him right now, finishing a recording in his studio above his woodworking shop, out in the garden or putting up a new swing on that pine tree overlooking the marsh for his three year old daughter AnnaLea.
