Songs for the Sacraments of Initiation
Children learn in many different ways and retain concepts in various degrees. Learning concepts from songs helps them understand the concepts and at the same time insures that they will remember them in an accurate way. This CD of seventeen songs composed by Father Cleo Schmenk helps children to understand the concept of spirit as they begin to learn about God and angels and other terms relating to religious belief. While the songs here are intended primarily for Catholic instruction, members of other Christian traditions may find some of the tracks to be appropriate for their children. Some songs address the seriousness of offending others and the nature of contrition to help them prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Other songs speak of the birth of Jesus, His life of teaching and miracles and His eventual death and resurrection. The songs correspond with the liturgical Readings of the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter cycle. The story of the Transfiguration and the Institution of the Eucharist help them prepare for the reception of First Eucharist. The CD is meant to supplement material written also by Father Schmenk to prepare children for First Penance and First Eucharist. The text to accompany these songs can be downloaded from the website fathercleo.net. Downloadable material includes the musical notation for voice and piano with guitar chords, color pictures illustrating the text of the Sunday readings and line drawings for children to color. Mary Behan Miller, the performer on this CD, has a solo CD available at CD Baby, 'A Celtic Journey' and is a member of the group 'Keltic Kaleidoscope.' Two of the group's CDs, 'Keltic Beginnings' and 'Some Keltic, Some Knot,' are also available here.
