Love & Other Distractions
It is not surprising that I am a little tardy coming out of the starting gate with my first CD of 12 original songs. I have the typical singer/songwriter history of obtaining my first guitar at age fifteen, writing my first songs while still a teenager, performing in my early to mid-twenties solo and with other musicians in my adopted home of Boulder, Colorado. However, distracted by boyfriends, burdened with an introverted personality and lacking the drive to endure the ups and downs of a musical career, I put my creativity into a marriage, desired pregnancy and motherhood. When my daughter was young I wrote poetry, returning to songwriting when she didn't need me as much. The songwriting improved, the boyfriends still distracted, but less so...(The marriage didn't last; hence, perhaps, the bluesy jazz genre? The 'like Joni'? Love and other distractions?) The blues of unrequited love or relationships gone bad, the serenity of chords played on acoustic guitar and simple, stark chords on my piano to express emotion -- I couldn't have made this CD any earlier in my life. Life can be short, nights can be long and music, art and love touch the soul.
