Product Notes

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's response to this CD: 'Lovely singing. Let me tell you, that you gave me much pleasure on a healthy and beautiful sounding way to these difficult songs. Your accompanist is of the best qualities, strictly in the style called for in these songs. Your German is excellant so that I assume you are of German ancestors.' American baritone THOMAS MEGLIORANZA's recent performances include Copland's Old American Songs with the National Symphony, Eight Songs for a Mad King with the LA Philharmonic, John Harbison's Fifth Symphony with the Boston Symphony and Bach cantatas with Les Violons du Roy. His recital of WWI-era songs was one of the Philadelphia Inquirer's "Ten Best Classical Performances of 2009". Opera roles include Prior Walter in Peter Eötvös' Angels in America, Chou En-Lai in Nixon in China, and the title role in Gordon Chin's Black Bearded Bible Man. He was a winner of the Walter W. Naumburg and Concert Artists Guild competitions. Recordings include Winterreise with pianist Reiko Uchida, songs of Virgil Thomson with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and a newly reconstructed Bach cantata with the Taverner Consort. Originally from northern New Jersey, he currently lives in New York City and is a graduate of Grinnell College and the Eastman School of Music. REIKO UCHIDA was born in Torrance, California and is a graduate of the Curtis Institute, Mannes College of Music, and the Juilliard School. Her recording String Poetic with Jennifer Koh, was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award. She has performed concertos with the LA Philharmonic, and the Santa Fe, Greenwich, and Princeton symphonies. As a chamber musician, she has played at the Marlboro, Santa Fe, Tanglewood and Spoleto music festivals and has collaborated with Anne Akiko Meyers, Sharon Robinson, Jaime Laredo, as well as the Borromeo, St. Lawrence and Tokyo string quartets. As a youngster, she performed on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. She is a past member of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two and studied with Claude Frank, Leon Fleisher, Edward Aldwell, Sophia Rosoff and Margo Garrett. Ms. Uchida currently lives in New York City where she is an associate faculty member at Columbia University. ABOUT THE RECORDING: Reiko and I made this recording in early June 2007 at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City. Judith Sherman produced and engineered the recording with the assistance of Jeanne Valonis. Philip Calabrese was the piano technician. ABOUT THE PIANO: Reiko plays a rare 1907 'Palatial' Pleyel grand piano on this recording, courtesy of Klavierhaus in Manhattan. After trying many different instruments, we were both captivated by the Pleyel's luminous, transparent, mellow sound and the intimate quality it brought to the Schubert songs. (Go the 'Schubert CD' page on my website to see photos of this very beautiful instrument.)
