Beginning of the End
The apparent talent that is incorporated in the four members of Mercenaries is embedded in their overwhelming ambition. This same ambition is what created The Mercenaries in the beginning. In November 2001, Hovannes Donelyan (drummer) met Harout Ichlokmanian (rhythm guitar, lead vocals) through a mutual friend at a party in Glendale, California. As the two began conversing they realized the similarities in their love for music. Both seemed to have a passion for hard rock and shared their instrumental ability, beginning the creation of the future band. In October, 2002 Hovannes met Michael Solis (lead guitar) at Guitar Center in Hollywood and was impressed with his talent, asking him to join their new band. In January, 2003 Sako Dovlatyan (bass guitar, and back up vocals) was the final piece of The Mercenaries. As the now complete band got together and collaborated with one another, they developed their own unique attitude toward their creative aspirations. Their influences included artists such as; Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Guns and Roses, Metallica, Tool and System of a Down. Practicing in Harouts old bedroom, they were able to record three songs in four months. Soon after, the band decided they were ready to share their music with the Sunset strip. Their first target was The Whisky a Go-Go and like very few bands have ever done, they played their first gig there. Selling triple the amount required to play there they soon became favorites of the world famous Whisky a Go-Go.
