The Moser/Nix Duo Charles Moser, Mandolin; Michael Nix, Guitar The Moser/Nix Duo draws their strikingly original repertoire from a variety of sources, including classical, folk and international music, as well as original compositions that exploit the unique blend and timbre of mandolin and guitar. Their work combines the compositional and arranging techniques of the classical musician with the rich modal idioms of forms of folk music and improvisation. Juxtaposing traditional and novelty tunes with Bach, Brazilian dances with jazz standards and original compositions, The Moser/Nix Duo views music-making as an integral living art that responds to the influences of our culture in dynamic and inclusive ways. The Moser/Nix Duo's original compositions are informed by a wide ranging musical interest. Their distinctive concerts are absorbing, a musical kaleidoscope! The Moser/Nix Duo was formed in 1995 to play folk-based classical and classical music for guitar and mandolin. They brought their music to a national audience, performing at Classical Mandolin Society of America conferences in Providence, RI, and Louisville, KY. They were guest artists-in-residence at the American Mandolin and Guitar Summer School (Providence) in 1998. Charlie and Michael have been playing music together since they were in their teens (very loud rock and roll), and were music majors where they gave their first classical mandolin and guitar performances in the late 1970's. Michael Nix has performed traditional classical repertoire, new classical, and original music on guitar, lute, and mandolin, throughout the United States and Asia. His most recent solo recording 'Preludes, Airs, and Dances' was released in the fall of 2001. He has composed solo music, songs, chamber music, symphonic works, electronic music, and opera. He holds a Masters degree in Music Composition (University of Massachusetts), and a Bachelor in Guitar performance (Keene State College). He taught guitar at Keene State College from 1980 to 1987. He played in the folk and bluegrass duo 'Whole Wheat' which was based in the Monadnock region. Charles Moser is an accomplished mandolin soloist. He has studied classical mandolin with Robert Paul Sullivan (New England Conservatory), Marilyn Mair, and Gertrud Troster (Germany). He holds a Bachelor's degree in music from Keene State College. He performs as a classical soloist and chamber player, and has played guitar and electric bass with a multitude of rock, pop, and folk bands. He has performed with the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble.
