Combining several influences like Nile, Obituary, the Police, and Behemoth, Necropolis have created a debut CD that crushes in every way possible. Dell Gateway is like a machine on drums, each song chock full of double bass thunder and several songs feature tons of blast beats. 'At the Point of the Blade' begins The Dead Season with a ferocious blast beat and Nile-like harmonies. The vocals are brutal in every sense of the word and match the intensity of the music. 'Riding on the Wings of Satan' begins the journey into the after-life. This song is clearly an homage to death metal pioneers Obituary, but Necropolis adds some twists with more dual harmony. As you will hear, the dual guitar harmony is a staple of Necropolis' sound. 'City of the Dead' continues the journey as keys are introduced with a beginning riff reminiscent of an early 80's Police classic before taking a left turn into what could be considered a black metal-style of riffage. 'Among the Ruins' is a dirge for the season of winter and an interesting twist in the story of The Dead Season. Again harmony and power rule for 4 and a half minutes. 'Dominion of the Blood and Sepulchre' is a perfect example of the Necropolis sound. The song begins with octave harmonies before ripping into speed metal mayhem. Then as has become a Necropolis trademark, they slide back into a twisting harmony that has to be heard to be appreciated. Then just as your lulled into a comfortable place, 'Dominion' dives into a riff tailor-made for the Pit. 'The Cleansing Fire' continues the journey into Hell and is a throwback to the 'South of Heaven'-era of Slayer. 'Earning the Demon's Wings' again shows the depth of harmony the Necropolis shows on The Dead Season. As our hero dives into the abyss, he hopes to earn his wings (be them demon or angelic) just to see the world again. Harmonies abound with Hypocrisy-like tendency. 'Sacrificial Lamb Upon the Altar of the Horned God' shows the deception and deceit as our hero finds that things are not always what they seem. Blast beats rule this song with some Slayer-like riffage in the chorus. 'Resurrection (Descent of the Fallen)' shows Necropolis' range as it introduces piano to the Dead Season and more strong harmonies to this seven and a half minute epic. This song begins somber and finishes angry. Resurrection boasts the best solo on the album as Rodd outdoes himself on this twisted monster. 'The Dead Season' brings the story to an end in a crushing overture of brutality. Probably the most diverse and angry song on the album, The Dead Season has it all--blast beats, harmony, tons of double-bass, and brutal death metal vocals.
