In a Hole
"He's in his room!" a family term for my occupying the front room of the house where these songs were written or learnt. It's also where music and fishing gear claim equal rights to stay, and only when health and safety procedures intervene to find some fishy -related pong or, untangle a child from a web of microphone leads does anything change! A lot of listening goes on here away from the television and my attention since the late 1990's has been drawn to traditional music and especially songs and singers from the south east of England. Sadly this is no longer common place so a bit of determined effort is needed to find this stuff (field and studio recordings on records c.d's and tapes, usually acquired from friends and second-hand record shops). It has been a real wonder for me especially when there is a sense of familiarity with some songs, a distant memory jogged, or perhaps it is the way they are delivered or played. I do recommend anyone interested in the history of ordinary English Folk should get stuck in to this stuff as soon as possible. It is truly inspiring but again I can't help thinking of all the songs, singers and players that were never recorded. On the mantle piece is my granddad's old pendulum clock surrounded by an ever-growing collection of oddities and above this on the chimney breast is an array of photographs of favourite fishing spots and the occasional famous capture just to prove it really was this big. On the opposite side of the room is the permanent residence of an old Abbey upright piano/Joanna which, not only can be heard on the CD, but importantly is also the support for demijohns of home-brew wine (my 3-into-1 lubricant for consoling disappointed anglers and for refreshing lacklustre musicians). Where circumstances meant it was more favourable to take recording equipment to the musicians, I have done so and, other rooms, and sheds in Whitstable and Canterbury have been taken over for the purpose. So, many thanks to all those who have given their time and I hope you all enjoy In a Hole.
