Product Notes

GUITARRA TUCUMANA The guitar is an instrument that since it's origin has been linked with popular music and, along with it's ancestors the lute and vihuela, has been the instrument par excellence used to accompany songs, from the troubadours and jongleurs of the Middle Ages to folk and popular songs of today. The instrument has also followed an academic school, beginning in the Renaissance with Luys de Narváez and John Dowland, continuing with classical composers Sor and Giuliani, and then reemerging with Tárrega and Aguado. Beyond question, the classical guitar secured it's place as a concert solo instrument in the hands of Andres Segovia. In Tucumán, a northwest province of Argentina, it has not been any different. The guitar has been rooted in popular folk songs, but has also, though much less known, flourished as a classical instrument. Guitarra Tucumana is comprised of compositions by guitarists and composers either born or linked to the province of Tucumán. Each composer explores the different sonorities of the guitar through his own style and musical language, including contemporary folk studies, fusion jazz and tangos to classical compositions. The repertoire gives the listener a clear panoramic view of the music of Argentina by expanding and disseminating the guitar repertoire of Tucumán, part of the national artistic patrimony of the country. Tucumán is a province with an important musical history and a very strong folk tradition. It is here that the acoustic guitar o "criolla", as it is called in Argentina, has taken on a vitally important role. Among the characteristic musical elements found in the Argentine folk music are: polyrhythms, the superimposition of two or more rhythms such as 6/8 and 3/4 and rasgueos, or strumming techniques, something that clearly differentiates the guitar from other instruments. The different strumming and percussive possibilities of the guitar open up a whole new world of sounds that explored in this varied repertoire. ABOUT Pablo Gonzalez Jazey The Argentine press acclaimed Pablo González Jazey´s interpretation of the Concierto de Aranjuez as "a flawless and subtle performance...brilliant interpretation from González, who proved his maturity and technical excellence...a pleasure..." Argentinean guitarist Pablo González Jazey has been heard in concert halls in Argentina, France, Italy, Brazil and the United States and has been featured as soloist in the major guitar repertoire, including Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasía de un Gentilhombre, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Concerto in D major, Op. 99, Vivaldi's Concerto in Re, Astor Piazzolla's Concierto para bandoneón, guitarra y orquesta, and Antonio Lauro's Concierto para guitarra y orquesta. Apart from his excellence in the classical repertoire, González Jazey champions the folk music from his native Northwest region of Argentina, offering recitals that marry his technical mastery of the instrument and his command of the traditional folk flavor and spirit of his playing.
