Shadows of Illusion
Paul has come to Albey Road Studio in Pittsburgh to record again with AL SNYDER. Paul and AL collabroate on this new tracks and get some great singers in the studio to perform with them . Paul handles most of the keyboard work, AL SNYDER starts all the tracks with drum programing and inventive bass work- and Dave Hanner plays all the acoustic and electric guitar. Dave and AL are from the nationally known band, 'The Corbin Hanner Band' . For twenty years Paul performed his uniquely conceived arrangements of piano solos on the full-size ebony Steinway baby grand in the atrium of One Oxford Centre, a downtown skycraper serving as both an upscale shopping forum and an office complex. Paul's established fans, along with the pas- sersby could both observe and absorb his unparalled keyboard talent. His first musical, 'Dracula - A Musical' for which he composed all music and lyrics was produced on the Pittsburgh city stage in 1993. Chrispher Rawson, Entertainment Editor for 'The Pittsburgh Post Gazette' reviewed the piece by writing: 'There is nothing more excit- ing than finding a musical as ripe for development as this,' 'I couldn't get it out of my head', 'a truly engaging score - often melodic, sometimes haunting, occasionally jaunty and generally appealing.' He also wrote: 'This is the kind of insinuating score that actually runs through your brain as you leave the theater. And it isn't just one song that kept popping up, but three or four that took turns distracting me.' The Pittsburgh Post Gazette listed Paul Michael Brown's 'Dracula - A Musical' as one of the years ten best scores, including broadway productions. Not wanting to be cornered as a musical theater type of songwriter, Paul began recording independent original songs that stood on their own ground. His musical compositions are extremely varied in style, rich in melody with memorable tunes that reached far beyond the standard I-IV-V chord progressions. This composer's academic study in music is at once apparent. His lyrical skills capitalize on unpredicatable rhymes that tell stories with actual settings, characters and plots, many of which contain cultural, news, psychogical and political statements. 'Shadows of Illusion' is an eclectic collection of tales and poems intended to showcase the vocal talents of Pittsburgh's finest singers. Paul sings two of the selections with his own unique and nuanced style. It was this CD release where Paul Michael Brown began to write about his seventeen years surviving with AIDS. On his most recent CD ( and most successful and popular) entitled 'Voices of the People', our songwriter dives into an incredible set of eleven new original songs, performing most of the vocals himself. In addition to the incredibly tasteful and well-conceived drum, horn and strings performances, all of the guitar work on each of Paul's discs- acoustic, classical in nature, electric, mandolin etc. - is sensitively and intelligently played byDave Hanner, the celebrated musician from Pittsburgh and Nashville's 'Corbin-Hanner Band'.
