Product Notes

'The coolest thing to happen recently was having one of my songs 'Another One For The Road' played on NPR's 'Car Talk'. A couple of other recent memorable moments, were sharing the stage with 'Lunasa' who at the time were being touted as the hottest new band out of Ireland. Another, was opening for England's Pete Morton and getting to sing some harmony on his 'Another Train.' Pete is just a really nice guy. Excerpts from an interview with Paul Scull. 2001 Singer and songwriter Paul Scull was born on November 17, 1952 in a then thriving industrial town of Reading, Pennsylvania. His musical training began in the church choir and on the electric organ at the age of eight. He became an avid listener of all types of music, and was especially influenced by the pop music as well as the folk music of the 1960's. Not satisfied with the limitations of the electric organ in his parents living room, he began teaching himself to play the piano, harmonica, dulcimer, autoharp and an assortment of percussion instruments. As a teenager, he began playing and performing with other local musicians whenever the opportunity presented itself. He was instrumental in forming several popular cover bands and performed in clubs and bars locally as well as regionally, for over 25 years. The 1980's proved to be a turning point, with treatment for substance abuse, a divorce, the death of his father, and a diagnosis and treatment for chronic depression. His life began anew. In 1993 Paul began to establish himself as an outstanding songwriter and primarily a solo performer, with the emphasis on original material. In 1995 Paul met another Pennsylvania singer and songwriter Harry Prutzman, when they both played at the Sylvan Arts Festival, and in 1996 they began performing as a duo, with Harry playing 12 string guitar and Paul playing mostly piano. Now, Paul has released his debut CD, 'In Good Company' which contains seven original compositions as well as a cover song by Canada's Lennie Gallant. The Tracks: APRIL FOOL - a song about the loss of a first love. (4:05 minutes) LETTING GO - covers everything from losing ones sense of place and belonging, the end of a marriage, addiction and healing. (3:45 minutes) I'LL GO ON WONDERING - 1960'S pop influence. This one earned a certificate of achievement in the 1998 Billboard Song Writing Contest. (2:07 minutes) LAMENT FOR THE READING RAILROAD - As a boy, and much to his mother's dismay, Paul played in the rail yards near his home. Those early surroundings made a lasting impression. (5:06 minutes) THE OTHER SIDE - The only cover song on the album. This one was penned by Lennie Gallant, a Canadian Paul first heard while visiting Prince Edward Island. (4:06 minutes) TO LOVE AGAIN - reflects a strong country influence. The lyric was actually written in the cab of a John Deere tractor while mowing hay. (4:26 minutes) WHY SHOULDN'T I ? - this is the bluesy one with the haunting intro. It was written for a television documentary about adolescent drug and alcohol addiction. (5:22 minutes) THAT SONG ABOUT THE DENTAL HYGIENIST - based on an actual experience. It's not exactly what would be called politically correct, but we didn't think that way 30 years ago. Most folks still find it amusing. (3:15 minutes)
