"Pillowsoft music to relax by." This was how one person described Phil Smith's CD entitled, "The Memory Lingers". This is a CD that will grab you and transport you into a quiet world of solitude and tranquility. The music is original, inspiring and the music is arranged and performed very professionally. I guarantee you will know who Phil Smith is within a short period of time, because the word is already spreading about this breakthrough artist from the Phoenix area. Do you like beautiful, melodic instrumental music? Do you like to be carried away to a different place, where you actually forget where you are and completely relax? Well, this is what has happened to more than one person after listening to his CD. One lady received the CD from a friend, who got the CD directly from Phil after an eye exam he had from her. He thanked her for the good work, and asked if she liked soft, instrumental music, especially piano music. She said, "yes, very much", and he gave her the CD, asking for feedback after she listened to it. As she listened later that day, she was immediately drawn to the beautiful piano pieces with orchestral accompaniment. She was taken "to a different place", as she described it. Later that week she asked her father to listen, and he too was very impressed. Who is this come-from-nowhere composer and pianist? Phil Smith studied classical piano as a child, his mother wanting him to be a concert pianist. But that wasn't his cup of tea. He had been thrilled listening as a young lad to the likes of Rachmaninoff, Debussy and Richard Rodgers. He was awakened to the beauty that music can impart to people, and found himself wanting to do the same for others that had been done for him. He began writing songs in his teens, and later said they were "absolutely awful!" But he kept at it, penning hundreds of songs on his piano. Then during his middle-age years, the computer exploded on the scene, and so did synthesizers and sample-playing keyboards. Phil set up a home studio, and for the next several years worked at refining not only his melodies, but also his arrangements. Mimicing his favorite styles of the times, such as Percy Faith, Andre Kastelanitz, and the music from movies such as "Carousel", "Oklahoma" and "Fiddler On The Roof." He later was asked why he didn't peddle his music sooner. His answer was: "Because it wasn't good enough at the time." In addition, he was probably too busy writing to sell his music. But he finally realized the time had come - and that time is now. And he is ready. His music is polished, beautiful and memorable. It has been described as "beautifully haunting", as well as being "Once in a lifetime creations of melody and harmony that will not soon be forgotten." He obviously has a special gift for creating beautiful melodies that is not heard these days very often. I thought that type of music went out with the vacuum-tube radio. This man has resurrected the beautiful melody, and added wonderful harmonic arrangements. The world may or may not be ready for this artist, but all I can say is, beautiful, pillowsoft music that inspires and relaxes, will always be in vogue.
