In Basement Air
Our group, The Rainy States, started off on january 2nd 2007 beginning with rehearsals held in our basement on belmont street. We recently completed our debut album, 'in basement air,' which was written, arranged, produced, and engineered by the group from home over the past nine months. There are years between us all, although we came together at different times in different places. Betsy and i are sister and brother, born in flint, Michigan and raised in the little railroad town of durand. In 1991 our father, a general motors employee, was transferred to the parts warehouse in Oregon. Our family settled in the small farming community of canby. Kevin morgan was born in Portland, Oregon one day before myself. Kevin, a studious guitar player with a nice voice, has always been my closest musical counterpart. He was living in canby when betsy and i arrived and we became fast friends. As a student attending Portland state university i met kevin van geem (Oakland, California) when we were paired to present a report on phase shifting for a class in which we were both enrolled. By this time kevin morgan, betsy, and i had decided to put a group together and we were looking for a drummer, which kevin van geem was and is. It is not our intent to sound like anybody else on our debut album; regardless the music that influences us is felt in our song writing, performance and production. The music we love is rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues. Groups like the kinks, tom petty and the heartbreakers, silkworm, and rilo kiley encourage us. ^#^we hope you enjoy what we've been able to put together both on the l.p. and on stage. Sincerely, benjamin johnson, february 2008.
