Product Notes

While Randal Keith is best known now to his fans as Jean Valjean in the long running musical Les Misérables, he has spent many years in local, regional and national companies playing a wide range of parts. He has played The Phantom in the First National Tour of The Phantom of the Opera and also played Raoul and Monsieur Andre during the six years he toured with that company. He is one of the few actor/singers who have played all three major male roles in Phantom. He toured in Sunset Boulevard before joining the Les Misérables cast, where he eventually became Jean Valjean in the Third National Les Misérables Tour. In July of 2002 he performed as the alternate Jean Valjean, along with the original Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, in the Third National tour's engagement in Shanghai, China, the first ever Broadway musical to visit that country. He then starred in the production in Seoul, Korea, and in February of 2003 was picked by producer Cameron Mackintosh to star as Valjean on Broadway to close Les Misérables' sixteen year run there in May 2003. Mr. Keith remembers that night as the emotional high point of his career to date, filled with incredible energy and love for a show that continues to enthrall audiences around the world. He went on to close the Broadway Tour in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2006. He has recently performed the roles of governor/innkeeper in Man of La Mancha, for which he received a nomination for the 2007 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award for Featured Actor in a Musical. He is presently performing as King Arthur in Spamalot in Las Vegas, Nevada. Other roles Mr. Keith has performed are Che in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Nicoli in Chess. He has sung in concert with the prestigious Cincinnati, Tulsa and Rochester Symphonies. His first CD, Life Has Been Good To Me is now available. It is a compilation of songs he has sung during his career on the musical stage and some songs he has always wanted to perform. It is a well-rounded CD giving full range to Mr. Keith's rich, resonant voice. A native of North Carolina, he attended Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, and now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, Karen. Karen is a special effects make-up artist who applied make-up for The Phantom of the Opera. They met in Ft. Lauderdale during the tour's run there, and it was love at first sight. They were engaged by the third date and married in the next city. Mrs. Keith was often with him on the road, always bringing along Merlin, a fluffy white dog who immediately steals the show wherever he is. Here is what the critics are saying about Randal Keith: 'Randal Keith (Valjean) is one of the best singers I have ever heard tackle this difficult score. Keith's range from low notes into falsetto is perfect in pitch and tone. His performance of...'Bring Him Home' was the best version I have heard of this song. Keith has the incredible ability to sing straight through the verse into the chorus without taking a break, in full belt no less! Keith's vibrato stays strong and solid.' John Garcia, Talkin' Broadway, Dallas 'Randal Keith (Jean Valjean) was chosen by legendary producer Cameron Mackintosh to be the final Valjean on Broadway when Les Mis ended it's 16-year run in May 2003. If his performance in Dayton was any indication, Mackintosh certainly made the right call. Keith was fantastic in what many consider to be one of the most challenging roles in the musical theater canon for a male actor. Keith wonderfully held the entire show in his hands. He brought down the house in Act Two with 'Bring Him Home.' As soon as he hit the infamous first three notes, the number became a signature moment filled with heartfelt pleading.' Russell Florence Jr., Dayton City Paper '....every minute from curtain up to curtain down is as captivating as the original. A large part of the credit goes to Randal Keith, who transforms Jean Valjean from a bitter, defiant parolee to a man of wisdom, courage and nobility. Some actors do it mainly with body language. Keith has the added advantage of an exceptional vocal range to express all the complexities of his character, from despair to supplication. His eloquent 'Bring Him Home' was a showstopper.' Maxine Ginsberg, Naples Daily News 'Les Mis veteran Randal Keith is sensational as Jean Valjean, the man on the run. Keith's got incredible range-from warm burnished baritone to sweet floating falsetto-and he knows how to shape a tune so that it holds listeners in it's spell.' Channing Gray, Journal Arts.
