Live Every Day
Rui Antonio Santos, 'Ras Moon', was born in 1966 on the island of Maio in the Cape Verdean Archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. Ras Moon's youth was marked by the Cape Verdean people's mounting struggle and eventual war against Portugal for an end to colonial rule. The folk songs of this revolutionary era, played against the backdrop of an unfolding African continent, and blended with the Jamaican reggae sounds of Bob Marley as it hit the coasts of Western Africa. This age of African independence made a strong impression on a young Ras Moon, and he taught himself how to play guitar and piano in order to be a part of the musical landscape of those times. Ras Moon began by playing the infectious music of Bob Marley before he even knew what the words meant. He also enjoyed playing the revolutionary folk songs of Cape Verde's independence movement. As he grew older he wrote his own songs, blending the passion and melancholy of traditional Cape Verdean melodies with upbeat rhythms and a reggae style. In his twenties Ras Moon came to the United States, and soon found a musical home as a keyboardist and vocalist for the Black Rebels, a roots reggae ensemble. He toured the country, creating an acclaimed sound with the international band members of the Rebels. Ras Moon traveled with the Black Rebels to Cape Verde to perform in annual festivals. In 1998 Ras Moon remained in Cape Verde to pursue musical projects with Cape Verdean musicians. His band, Maio Smile, toured throughout Cape Verde and Portugal. He released his first solo album, Uhuru Na Ujama, in Cape Verde, it quickly became a popular radio selection, and the title track was an instant anthem for African freedom and self-reliance. Since then Ras Moon has traveled across the Atlantic making music and promoting peace and justice with various musical projects. His current ensemble, Ras Moon and Monsoon, are based in New England and perform regularly in the northeast. Ras Moon's 2009 release, Live Every Day, reflects the evolution of his music in a blend of styles and languages in a unique World Music offering. The full-length CD is a collection of vibrant, soulful, and provocative tracks . True to his spirit, Ras Moon has included songs with a social message in danceable and energetic arrangements.
