Schertzman, Riva : Vol. 2-Gentle Waves
The music of Riva Schertzman reflects the rich tapestry of Riva's life which has always been full of adventure, passion and intense energy. A composer of 4 CD's and numerous other works in various styles, she is also an accomplished pianist, teacher, mother of five children, a dedicated wife of a physician and a religious woman. Riva currently resides in Gush Etzion, Israel with her family. Riva considers herself a healer because she uses music to uplift people, to inspire and to help people feel good. In Israel, with an atmosphere of terrorism, Riva has learned how to engineer her music to achieve just these effects. People from around the world contact her to give feedback on her Gentle Waves CD's. Things like...'I gave birth with your CD in the background!' or 'a cancer patient felt so good listening to your music' or 'I was stuck in traffic and playing your CD. It was the first time I ever enjoyed a traffic jam.....' All kinds of people of all ages can enjoy Gentle Waves. What is Riva's music like? Riva has always loved a good melody. And, by the way, a good melody is hard to find, but Riva puts a lot of time into forming her music, so that when she's finished, it will truly move you. She feels that even if it's music just to help people relax, the music should always be beautiful. Because beautiful melodies tends to make a person feel good, not just random sounds or strange frequencies as is found on many relaxation CD's today. So, no matter what she's composing for, she never skimps on the quality of the music. Everything is carefully worked out, masterly performed and pleasing to the ear. And Riva likes to vary her styles so that her CD's contain something for everyone. So, Gentle Waves II, the second of a series of relaxation CD's is a journey. The music flows in a pattern. It takes you from beautiful, passionate calming music, builds up a bit to easy listening and then slowly returns to a calmer pace with a wonderful piano solo and then New Age music, finally finishing with some nice meditative pieces with the sound of some ocean waves added. Riva's very technical background began as a small child where she was recognized for her great abilities in music composition, earning her prizes and scholarships. Also interested in computer science, she received her B.A. from the University At Albany in music composition with a second field in computer science, specializing in the application of music and computers. At one point in her life, Riva composed musical files for computer games, and she now uses computer programs for editing and arranging her music. She studied music composition and theory with film composer Leonard Kastle for three years. Later she continued music studies at Buffalo University and after, short courses in advanced harmony and music theory in Israel. There she is a recognized composer and performer, music teacher of piano, composition and music theory. She also arranges and composes music for theatre productions in Israel. Riva has been active in donating CD's and performing for victims of terror and people in crisis, even in areas in which she has had to put on a bullet proof vest and go with an army escort. She has consulted psychologists for guidance in what will help people relax in the construction of her relaxation CD's. Riva has been written up in many newspapers and magazines in Israel such as Parents and Children Magazine and Mishpacha.
