Product Notes

The Crooner steps to the microphone, and the tunes cascade out: familiar and classic, but somehow still timely - songs written by master composers, and meant to be sung with swagger and grace. Some of these songs go back more than 75 years, and they've known some true friends in that time. Now they have another. The Crooner - Sam Fazio by name - offers them up in a voice that's warm and inviting, virile but vulnerable: an instrument that borrows from old (Sinatra) as well as new (Kurt Elling). The Crooner makes it sound easy. He belts the Songbook in an open-throated, big-hearted shout that grew up on Broadway. But he tempers it with jazz phrasing. And he cloaks it all in that deceptive nonchalance that Frank and Tony and Mel and Nat brought to the table: nonchalance, as in "cool"; deceptive, because the heart always peeks through nonetheless. This is Fazio's second album, and in every way it represents a step forward from his first. This time, he's added horns, sharing the spotlight with a host Chicago's most expressive jazz soloists (hornmen Art Davis, Jim Massoth, and Tim Coffman, and guitar hero Andy Brown). The arrangements add power and color without intruding on the main event. And emboldened by their fraternal embrace, Fazio sails into these songs with new intensity and renewed ardor - even as he maintains the even keel that identifies the crooner from one generation to the next. What he does not do says just as much about his approach, and plays just as big a role. He doesn't remake the harmonies. He doesn't change the rhythms, and he doesn't distort the melodies. He doesn't turn these compositions into funhouse mirrors of themselves just to attain some imagined modernity. He let's the material speak through him, and trusts that his interpretation - reflecting of all the things that he has felt and learned on the road to Right Now - will impart the required individuality. It happens again and again, generation to generation, and it keeps these songs alive and intact. It's a simple symbiosis, really. If tunes like this didn't exist, the Crooner wouldn't, either. And without a singer to absorb them and interpret them and share them with the audience, the songs would sit in a box on a shelf in the back of some closet, their delights hidden from us all. But bring the artist and the material together, and it's win-win. So Sam Fazio takes the mic, and the tunes cascade out. And when he's finished, when he's left his stamp and packed up his music and headed home, the music remains in the air - for as long as you, the listener, choose to hear it. NEIL TESSER.
