On this disc from Aparte, the acclaimed cellist Ophelie Gaillard pairs Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto with the complete music for cello and piano by Franz Liszt. The result is a fascinating juxtaposition of two very different worlds that combines passion with an expression of the mysteries of life. For the Schumann, Gaillard is accompanied by the National Radio Orchestra of Romania under the young conductor Tiberiu Soare. Schumann, who took up the cello at one time, attains an expressive maturity in his concerto that enables him to bring out all the warmth and sensuality of the instrument. For the second half of the disc, Gaillard is joined by pianist Delphine Bardin (winner of the coveted Clara Haskil Prize). Liszt's pieces show the soberness and bold language that characterize the music of his late period.
