Product Notes

Quark features songs from a range of styles within the modern rock genre, due to the contributions of three main songwriters: Visionary composer Diane Marie takes a most artistic and spiritual approach to her work. Her lyrical content dives headlong into many aspects of the human condition, from secretive natures in 'My Friend Benny' to the importance of friends in 'What Matters Now.' Some of Diane's enchanting features are her surprising vocal phrasing and unconventional guitar playing. Through most of The Silent Workers' performance, bassist Ted Kloba quietly contributes a range of fluid lines from his fretless five-stringed instrument, but moves screaming to center stage when singing his own compositions. The subject matter of his compositions tends toward the quirky and ironic, as in his tuneful discourse on failure, 'Again ' or his story of a friend's unsympathetic father, '(John Lennon Said) Julia.' Well-crafted songs are the specialty of singer and guitarist Darlene Wentland. She shows versatility in her songs as she rocks hard on 'New Page' and sings about designing one's own destiny in 'The Architect Effect.' Catchy melodies shine forth in her vocal performance, as well as in her articulate guitar solos. Darlene's sincere love of music is reflected in the emotion of her stage presence. Kevin Wik, The Silent Workers' drummer supports and propels the band with his flamboyant style and sense of drama. Wik's drumming is powerful, with a range of influences. He forges a unique texture of sound: In the course of a performance, you can see him wielding sticks, mallets or brushes. The most appealing aspect of The Silent Workers' sound is the way all of the members work together. The complimentary styles of the two guitarists augment the adventurous rhythm section. All members sing, leaving an interesting vocal impression.
