Product Notes

Sleepy Dickens is the realization of the music of Nick Levinos and the freshman EP "Hail Mary" is the first studio effort from him to come to fruition. Nick has been a musician at heart for as long as he can remember. He started to take it seriously under the tutelage of high school choral director and music teacher Richard MacIntyre. After college, and many years of strumming old folk songs, Nick decided to advance his guitar playing skills to a level commensurate with his overall knowledge of music. As fortune would have it, he happened upon a brilliant jazz guitar player/instructor not five minutes from where he lived in New Jersey by the name of Walt Bibinger, with whom he studied for about seven years. Nick now lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he has spent his years since 2003 playing with local bands of the Lehigh Valley such as The Sconnsyltucky Ooftah Boys, Joe Pro, The Rabies and, most notably, as the keyboardist for The Insidious Rays. Now it's time for Nick to take his place in the driver's seat as the composer and front man for Sleepy Dickens. Evidently, his move to Bethlehem, which seemed like a gamble at the time, turned out to be a bet on a winning horse. At least inasmuch as he now finds himself in an artistic community that seems to stockpile great musicians as if they were fall out shelter rations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The result being a crackerjack studio lineup with which he could not have been happier. "I couldn't have auditioned a better lineup, and they're all in my phonebook!" He says of the group. Friend and band mate several times over, Jonny "Pakalolo" Braun, has played and grown as a musician along with Nick for the better part of the last ten years. From a family of drummers, his father, Dave, steeped his childhood in music of all kinds and facilitated the kind of encyclopedic knowledge, musical appreciation and well rounded approach to his craft that one would expect from a person with a masters or doctorate in music. Nick says, "He is the standard to which I compare all other drummers. His drums are the ones I hear in my head now, when I've gotten a composition to the stage where a beat gets established." Bassist, Bill Melcher, is one of those rare people who can split his attention between two passions without either one of them suffering for it. Fortunately for him, he gets to do both in the same place. If he's not perfecting the recipe for his chili or quelling a mad lunch rush at The Tally Ho, he's likely playing his bass there. He has been a staple of the Lehigh Valley music scene for many years and there's a good reason for that. He's a great bassist. Having played with Hurry Down Sunshine, The Kites, The Crack Babies and more recently, The Rabies and Tavern Tan, he comes to the project both imminently qualified and highly coveted. Brian Davis is a more recent addition to this circle of musicians and, man, was he worth the wait! As a co-worker of Pakalolo's at The Paul Green School of Rock in Downingtown, PA, he gets to teach kids how to play some of the greatest music of the twentieth century. To give you an idea of the level Brian is on, Nick had this to say about his playing, "His freakish talent has screwed up my playing so many times, I had to learn to tune him out. He is so good that I would just stop playing involuntarily and stare at him like I didn't have a choice." But, it is his humility and graciousness that seal the deal.
