Somethin' Stirring in the Burbs
Solpics, pronounced (soul-picks) are an L.A. based hip hop trio consisting of Lank Link, Sir Plunk and Stern. The group started in 1994 when Lank and Stern attended high school together in the San Fernando Valley. Both were avid hip hop fans at a young age who immediately became hooked on early NWA, Rakim and Beastie Boys albums. Solpics was formed as a mere hobby to occupy the mindless Friday nights in the valley. Friends would joke about the countless weekends they would spend rapping in their parents closets and drinking cheap liquor. This creative surge in the mid 90's was sparked by many influences that still prevail in the Solpics sound today. A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan, Gangstar and Redman are among the favorites. The very early years of Solpics recordings were captured on dozens of mix tapes that were given to friends who once laughed, but now urged the group to continue to with this 'hobby'. The pics'sound is like no other, with Stern's arrangements pulling from folk and rock samples and Lank perfecting his ability to build songs, this was slowly turning from a hobby to a legitimate hip hop contender. Then an explosion took place when Sir Plunk joined the group in the fall of 1998. Lank Link had always wanted a partner in crime to share mic time and ideas with, who better than his younger brother. During the late 90's Solpics performed at house parties, clubs and opened up for Dilated Peoples at the famous Whisky A Go Go. After a year long hiatus, Lank Link returned from the Bay Area and the group began production in 2002 on the first official LP, Something Stirrin in the Burbs, which drops in summer 2005. With 15 tracks full of banging beats and comedic punch lines, hip hop fans worldwide will be hooked on Sir Plunk, (a/k/a The Accredited Cheddar Chin) Lank Link, (a/k/a The Kock Rap Apostle) and Stern, (a/k/a Copper).
