Take Back the Mic
'Here are musicians, poised with a positive vibe and with lyrics so uplifting that you actually believe, if only for one night, that slowly, out of a species-wide weariness for discord and conflict, a new world mood may emerge from the street and the Net, somehow defying the odds-a spirit of promise and hope and harmony, a spirit that denies dissonance. Soulfege let's us dream such sweet dreams, in vibrant colors.' - VanityFair.com What would you get if Bob Marley were jammin' with The Fugees on a street corner in West Africa? Afro-Diasporic Groovalicious Funkadociousness!!! Founded by two vocalists & MCs who met in a choir at Harvard, Soulfège is a vivid new voice in the increasingly monotone world of Urban Music. Fusing a unique blend of Hip Hop, Reggae, Funk & West African Highlife, the critically-acclaimed Afropolitan fusion band has electrified and inspired audiences with driving rhythms, tight harmonies, powerful lyrics and authentic musicianship. The band's Harvard-educated founders are creators of 'Take Back the Mic™,' a movement to put meaning back into today's music and to challenge a new generation of youth to take leadership in society. Soulfège is led by musician, activist and entrepreneur Ashong (aka DNA), who was recently dubbed a 'YouTube phenom' by the New York Times after an impromptu interview with him outside a pre-election Barack Obama rally garnered over one million hits. See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kica8hmSdAM A formidable speaker and impassioned advocate for social change, Ashong is joined in his musical mission by close friend and band co-founder Jonathan Gramling, Hip Hop drumming phenomenon Stix Bones, Berklee grad & Funk/Rock bassist Alex Staley, Ghanaian percussion prodigy Atta Addo and keyboard wizard Micah Hulscher. After completing their new record 'Take Back the Mic,' the band parted with former singer Kelley Nicole who left to pursue a solo career. Replacing her is another Berklee grad, Austrian/Zimbabwean singer-songwriter 'Yela,' rounding out the lead vocal trio. Proving that positive can still be powerful, the video for 'Sweet Remix,' the lead single from their self-released debut album 'Heavy Structured (Plus),' aired in more than 50 countries across Africa, the Caribbean & Europe, topping charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The music and the movement have been featured in such major media as VanityFair.com, MTV Africa, NPR, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, MNet Africa, ABC Chronicle and BBC Worldservice, reaching 146 million listeners worldwide. Soulfège has left it's indelible mark on the Boston and Indie music communities and is poised to enter the mainstream. Their recent collaborations include tracks with W. African Hip-Life legend Reggie Rockstone, Grammy-winning Dancehall Superstar Bounty Killer and performances with Multi-Platinum, Hip-Hop Group Arrested Development. With a distinctive groove and a message that has spawned a growing, global movement, Soulfège is poised to redefine the sound and image of Urban Music as they challenge a global generation to literally 'Take Back the Mic.'
