John Schmergel is the chief song-writer of Sputnik Sweetheart. He began writing songs when he was fifteen years old, and he hasn't looked back since. When John was sixteen, he fronted a rock duo called the Corduroy Suit, and the band put out an album in the spring of 2002 that was met with both critical and commercial success. After touring with the Suit for almost two years, John left the band in 2004 to pursue a solo career. That year he released his first solo album, 'The Dude Does Love Songs,' and while critically well received, the disc failed to find a large audience. Since that period, John has been mastering his song-writing craft, and in the summer of 2007, he entered a Brooklyn recording studio with several talented musicians to begin work on his latest project. After three months of intensive recording, John emerged with a new EP that represents the culmination of his song-writing technique. The EP, titled 'Coming Back,' draws influences from the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Elliott Smith, Creedance Clearwater Revival, The Band, Wilco, Bruce Springsteen, and Ryan Adams, to just name a few. While writing more songs for a full LP due out later this year, Sputnik Sweetheart is now taking their music to the masses, playing at venues all over the New York City area. John was once quoted saying that he wants his songs to 'tell an intimate story but speak universal truths about the notions of love, loss, and redemption.'
