Minneapolis mood rockers, Standbye, return with 'The Coping Mechanisms,' the highly-anticipated follow-up to 1999's 'Days Spent Waiting' (Guilt Ridden Pop) and their first release on 2024 Records. After garnering substantial press coverage and peaking at number 51 on CMJ Top 200, Standbye took some time off to regroup. They emerged in the winter of 2001 with rekindled fervor, and entered Seedy Underbelly studios (Semisonic, Kid Dakota, Alva Star) with producer/engineer Jaques Wait, fresh off a stint working with Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band). The result: a powerful and stunning seven-song EP titled 'The Coping Mechanisms.' The music ranges from charging, intricate rock to the haunting minimalism of cello, guitar, and singer Sally Grayson's unmistakable voice lamenting the loss of a loved one. After visiting a distraught friend in New York City just days after 9/11, Sally penned 'Don't Panic, Don't Panic, Don't Panic,' a song that respects the sadness of the events while voicing impatience with simple answers and pleading for comprehensive justice. Standbye has shared the stage with several national acts, including At The Drive-In, Alkaline Trio, Hot Rod Circuit, Further Seems Forever, Tristeza, Stavesacre, Ultimate Fakebook, Piebald, and Brandston. They also rock locally with bands such as Houston, Cadillac Blindside, The Plastic Constellations, Mark Mallman, and Valet. Although Standbye's sound is notoriously difficult to pigeonhole, the group has been compared to the likes of Rainer Maria, Ultrababyfat, The Donnas, Mates of State, The Cure, The Pixies, The Breeders, Built to Spill, and Sleater-Kinney.
