Ghost Cats with Wings
'If you've been lucky enough to catch Stillwillis play live, then you can understand the buzz surrounding the five unassuming musicians involved. With a very calm and collected demeanor, they've catapulted themselves into the Philadelphia jam-band scene as the ones to watch this year. Although the 'jam-band' tag does them a great disservice because they are so much more than that, they take the comparisons in stride. A better way to describe their sound is as an eclectic blend of folk, blues, American rock, roots reggae, booty-shakin' funk with a sprinkle of jazzy explorations and a punk-rock do-it-yourself attitude.'Jimmy Mac,Compendium Magazine Vol. 1 Issue 11 A shared musical taste for such bands as The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, and Wilco, and top notch songwriters like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Elliot Smith brings the members of Stillwillis together for a seamless musical blend that has been aptly described as Acid folk. The majority of the songwriting responsibilities for the band are provided by the considerable talents of Matt, Raph, and Chris while Dean's drumming provides a seriously danceable groove. The distinctive lead guitar of Mike Caroto colors the sound with a searing rock and roll feel. With all the members taking turns at the microphone (sometimes spontaneously) the vocals move from a chilling subtlety to bombastic choruses reminiscent of The Band or Weezer. Based out of Philadelphia the band consists of Dean Gorfti on drums, Raphael Cutrufello on keyboards, and Matt Helm, Chris Grunwald, and Mike Caroto on guitars. Chris and Mike alternate duties on the bass guitar adding a unique twist to the typical rock band roster. The considerable improvisational skills of each musician keep the audience involved from one note to the next and ensure that no two shows will be the same. The release of their first CD, Ghost Cats with Wings, has garnered the band local pick of day and recent airplay on Philadelphia's respected WXPN.
