Product Notes

The story of Vektor is a compilation of recordings from the 80's featuring the band Vektor, and it is jazz in the sense that jazz is the stuff which toys with convention. Vektor was generally a quintet, electric bass, drums, guitar, tenor sax and trombone. We played original music in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from 1983 to 1990. The music was an eccentric mix of jazz, free-blowing, funk, punk, and whatever else seemed appropriate at the time. Vektor was primarily an instrumental aggregation, but there were some vocal tunes which featured Victor Bateman. Mr. Bateman wrote all the material. Influences? Frank Zappa, Sun Ra, Bill Frisell, Dave Holland, Defunkt, Blood Ulmer, the usual radical suspects, plus other people playing in Toronto at the time. Tom Walsh, Nic Gotham, Reiner Weems, Bill Grove, Paul Cram, and others. We had a lot of fun playing this stuff. It is well-written, well-played, and worth listening to. It is also danceable if you are uninhibited. Listen to Victor Bateman on bass, Perry White on sax, Stephen Donald on trombone, Martin Rickert or Mark MacCarron or Kim Ratcliffe on guitar, Graeme Kirkland or Stich Wynston or Barry Romberg on drums, and enjoy.
