Fresh & Familiar
NOTES FROM THE PRODUCER: Just two years before this album was released, Susan, an accomplished classical musician, started sitting in on a weekly jam at the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. There, Upstate New York's best swing musicians were taken by her sunny enthusiasm and out-of-the-box jazz prowess. Audiences were delighted to rediscover the musical treasures of jazz standards as they were performed when they were new: subtly, with humor and intelligence. These arrangements are rhythmically enhanced using two rhythm guitars. Horns, violin and piano add highlights to the settings, but the main focus is the groove, an essential often sacrificed when jazz tries to be pop. Here is our first tribute to some great jazz standards: fresh and familiar.
