Van Gilse's Symphony No. 4 premiered Nov. 28, 1915, with the composer himself conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra. After this great performance success his publisher printed a hundred scores (though van Gilse had to cover the costs). And so it was that his powerful and individual 4th symphony was not forgotten. In fact, it became one of his most performed works.
