Product Notes

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: When was the last time you heard a dance melody from 14th-century Italy played next to a Bulgarian padushko? Or an old English ballad sung with the heart and soul of American blues? How about the sweet, ringing tones of a Celtic harp accompanied by the eerie drones of a hurdy-gurdy? Variety and cross-cultural pollination have been Telynor's hallmarks since John and Anna Peekstok started playing together in 1983. John was a rock drummer and keyboard player in Michigan before he moved to Seattle and took up the harp. When he met Anna, an accomplished recorder player, guitarist, and singer, they discovered a shared interest in traditional acoustic music and joined forces, choosing the Welsh word for 'harper' as their band name. The Peekstoks share stage and studio with a remarkable collection of instruments, including the hurdy-gurdy, cittern, nyckelharpa, bodhrán, fiddle, guitar, recorder, and whistle Ñ and sometimes the Celtic harp, mountain dulcimer, didjeridu, synthesizer, and electric bass. Anna's spirited vocals rise over this tapestry of sound with vigor and authority. The duo's repertoire comes primarily from the British Isles, France, and Appalachia, and ranges from truly ancient to originals composed in the vibrant styles of traditional music. Telynor's recordings have been nationally acclaimed as some of the best independently released folk music of recent years. ABOUT THIS CD: Praised for it's musicianship and progressive arrangements, this album introduced Telynor's unique way of blending traditional music from many cultures with contemporary energy and style. EXCERPTS FROM PUBLISHED REVIEWS: 'Combine the sounds of The Pentangle, a medieval consort, a bit of Jethro Tull, and perhaps some acoustic Led Zeppelin tinged with Bulgarian influences and you've got a rough idea of Telynor's music.' ÑNiles Hokkanen, The Mandocrucian's Digest 'The quality of their playing is very impressive, particularly considering the great variety of instrument types theyÕve been able to master. No less impressive is AnnaÕs strong pure singing voice, which renders songs both in English and French...All is played with style and grace and skill. These are two seriously talented people.' ÑSteve Winick, Dirty Linen 'This album features an energetic but exquisite overlay of recorders, hurdy gurdy, guitar, bass, cittern, mandolins, tin whistle, percussion and vocals into a power house sound. If you can imagine the Bothy Band playing Medieval music, with Sam Bush sitting in, then youÕll enjoy this album...(Anna's) wonderful alto is unrestrained and eminently understandable, full of vigor and emotion...I had not previously heard of Telynor and I wonder why. This is first rate music and deserves a much wider listenership.' ÑJohn Nielson, The C Note.
