Eager to Please
Vocalist-songwriter-rhythm guitarist Chuck Miller provides narratives that neatly balance description and introspection via terse couplets and resonant refrains. There's a raucous jangle to the band's best tunes (the title track, 'Shut-Ins,' and 'The Word') akin to recent solo outings by former Replacements' front man Paul Westerberg. The lighter, more catchy 'Made Up Her Mind' has garnered the most prominent local radio airplay, and lead guitarist Don Diez occasionally injects a brawnier element to the group's sound with arching, Neil Young-styled solos on 'Hard to Stop' and 'Replaced.' This 1997 debut is a chronicle of a nascent band in the process of cobbling together studio time and sorting through drummers.
