Reviews for Ma Ma Mr Nice single Toxic Pete - Ma Ma MrNice Aptly named Tenderhooks and their unique blend of indie with some of the weirder rock machinations of electro experimentation are releasing their new single, 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' and look set to provide that well needed wake-up call to the music scene. Tenderhooks' may have chosen an alternative musical route but it's that element of surprise and their charming Englishness that sets them apart from the rest - tender hooks indeed! Tenderhooks just don't conform and they certainly don't simply follow like so many outfits out there; Tenderhooks strive to lead with their catchy commercial take on 'pop' rock. Tenderhooks make a joyous noise as they continue to push hard at the 'envelope', refusing to be just another indie band, refusing to take the easy road, refusing to sell out to commercial banality. 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' typifies Tenderhooks' carefully nurtured alternative soft rock approach and showcases their imaginative writing and skilful musicianship. The unusually angular but jangly intro to the ballsy 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' gives us a clue! Listen further to sample the gloriously harmonious melodies and clever choruses that make Tenderhooks the driving force they are. If you're anything like me you'll soon be adding your own harmonies as you can't help but join in! Accompanied by the equally enjoyable 'Tiny Bombs' with it's beautifully 'orchestral' intro and the irresistible 'The One Meant For Me', 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' by Tenderhooks pretty much tells the Tenderhooks story in short shrift; Tenderhooks go the gentle but alarmingly hooky route towards commerciality - perhaps still a little leftfield for absolute mainstream success but without a doubt true contenders, Tenderhooks just have something that little bit different that makes them special. All the tracks here feature on the third Tenderhooks album with 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' the first to be selected for 'solo' flight. Tenderhooks work is innovative and very persuasive - Tenderhooks, as they carefully tread their way forward by ignoring indie normality, choose invention over same-old, same-old; Tenderhooks' slightly more gentle but ever so catchy way may take longer to reach the 'pot of gold' but, as long as they don't give up the fight, Tenderhooks are worthy contenders and deserve success and fame for their slightly diverse take on popular electric music. 'Ma Ma Mr.Nice' by Tenderhooks is wonderfully different and thoroughly deserves whatever positive plaudits it gets!! Seek 'em out; you might be pleasantly surprised! Peter J Brown aka toxic pete Rhythm & Booze - Ma Ma Mr Nice A whilst back we reviewed an album entitled Slap Happy, the work of maverick genius, Markus Leinweber, a stunning, mature and captivating release that, in a just world, should have made Tenderhooks something of a household name. However as we all know the fickle music industry seems to be all about style over substance and so Mr Leinweber is still awaiting that breakthrough he so richly deserves. Ma Ma Mr Nice is the latest single from Tenderhooks and is set to be featured on the forthcoming third album by the the Tenderhooks project, the title track is a wonderful infectious bouncy pop rock featuring choppy guitars, contagious rhythms and a huge hook-laden chorus that'll weld a smile onto the face of the most hardened cynic. The second track, Tiny Bombs opens with an orchestral barrage of strings and piano before developing into a dramatic and sweeping indie epic complete with glorious vocal harmonies and tasty melodies, that anyone with a passing interest in modern song composition will lap up with glee. The final number, One Meant For Me, is a stripped down affair complete with all manner of pattered percussion, a simplistic guitar strum and a lovely choral vocal that'll melt the blackest of hearts. Tenderhooks have once again come up with the goods on this delightful single and if we can judge the forthcoming album on this release it's set to be another classic, let's just hope that this time Tenderhooks get the plaudits they deserve. Rhythm & Booze Rating 9.
