Product Notes

A melodic bass line carries you down a rhythmic path of music. Hard to pigeon hole, just like the variety of influences in the songwriters musical history. This CD is a swirl of diversity. You have rock based selections like 'Once in a While' and 'Lessons' and the eerie tones in 'Psychic in a Ghost Town'. 'Lost in Traffic' has flashes of jazz instrumentals from Thoms time with his own Jazz radio show. Some country pops out in 'The Farm' and hints of ambient music reflected on the cut 'Sunrise at NewGrange' . 'The Emperor' uses different audio clips from old public domain films mixed in with the music to create something timely and funny. The final cut, 'GoodMorning Brighteyes' is a morning lullaby devoted to his two lovely daughters. All in all, this collection of songs makes it hard to figure out what bin to put it in. Just like Thoms life. Thom Droney grew up in the "leave it to beaver" world of West Hartford CT, the third child of John and Patricia Droney. His family has a lineage of traditional Irish musicians stretching back at least 2 generations and extending 1 beyond his. It was not the average growing up having world class musicians playing sessions in the kitchen and people dancing in the living room. Dabbling in traditional Irish fiddle as a kid, Thom explored the visual arts thru most of his late teens and early 20's even doing a solo show of his paintings in 1997. Thom's view that 'art is done by people, not other people', came from his families musical tradition and by watching his father create intricate marquetry (wood inlay) on the kitchen table throughout his whole life. Eventually completing the custom 5-string Bass played on this CD. Thom's only, non-living, prized possession. Thom taught himself how to play bass on a second hand Fender 4 string and a tiny practice amp. Not that the practice amp mattered, he couldn't plug it in . At the time, he was living in a non-electrified hunting cabin in rural Connecticut. Reading by candle and learning bass with his jaw bone pressed against the instrument. Hearing the notes reverberate thru is skull. Thom met and settled in with a group other musicians and thus began the most productively, non-productive 14 years of his musical life. Every friday night for a decade and a half, Thom, Pat Craffey, Kip Dalpe and Jason Werner. The Cronies, as they sometime called themselves, would get together and play in a corner studio on the top floor of the old Colt gun factory in Hartford CT. The huge windows facing west and south bathed the place in beautiful sunsets. Happily directionless, the quartet religiously got together, missing very few evenings to create int the night. They'd float from one original song to a cover, to another original, experimenting in between. They only played out live a mere dozen times in all 14 years. When they wanted to it was easy to find a gig. It was just that the 'magic' that often occurred when freely playing was what they sought....not the rush of playing ou. The magic in creating. In a stroke of genius, the city of Hartford in conjuction with the state of Connecticut and the owners of the Colt Building, came up with an idea to improve the Colt Building......thus the studio was closed. Over the span of 20 years the old factory had organically evolved into an artist colony. Filled with musicians, painters, sculptors, digital artists and even a luthier, On any given night you could hear 2 or 3 different bands traveling from the parking lot, down the long hallway and up the manual freight elevator to the 5th floor.. Of course, with a center of creativity like that, the best thing to do is fix it. Start by kicking everyone out, dawdle on renovations, over run the cost, raise the rents to make it impractical and voila .....ruined. The merry band of musicians scattered. After 14 years, they all needed to stretch their wings. Thom retreated into his home production studio and produced 2 CD's in 2 years. The first was a collection of his former 'bands' recordings, entitled " Last Night at the Hartford Hotel". The other is his current solo CD, One Tree Forest. Thom has already written a dozen new tunes for his next CD, and plans on recording to begin this fall. Thom happily spends his days as a professional horticulturist in Connecticut. He lives back in his hometown of West Hartford with his wife Kathleen and his two daughters, Aine and Teagan....oh and Mr Teeny Buttons the cat ....the worlds worst dog.
