Product Notes

Tom Gibney was born in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1948. His parents Pat and May had emigrated from Ireland in the late 1920's, meeting and marrying about ten years later. The family soon moved to Asbury Park, N.J. and eventually to Hawthorne, NY, where Tom spent most of his childhood. Both of his grandfathers, Richard Gibney of Oldcastle, Co. Meath and Thomas O'Dowd of Gurteen, Co. Sligo were musicians, as were several of his uncles and great uncles; but Tom had little exposure to the Irish music that was his heritage. May had many of the tunes and songs of her youth in her head, but she was busy working and raising four children. Traditional music became part of Tom's life during the folk music revival of the 1960's. Although he was making money as the singer in a rock and roll band during his college years, he was growing to love traditional music, adding the fiddle, banjo, autoharp and mandolin to the guitar he had picked up in high school. For the next 36 years, until his death in 2005, he accumulated a repertoire of songs and tunes that he dearly loved. It was Tom's delight to share music with others, and he made new musical friends wherever he lived: Boston, Rhode Island and finally Princeton, New Jersey. Tom sang and played with Lisa Neustadt, Jean Redpath and the Angel Band, with David Jones and Heather Wood as "Poor Old Horse", with the Princeton community of contra dance musicians and with fellow lovers of Sacred Harp These recordings were made in the last year of Tom's life, after he realized he wouldn't be with us much longer. The process of recording and then working with these recordings was something he focused on with great enthusiasm. He always knew exactly what he wanted to hear and we hope that, were he listening now, he'd be pleased. And God grant we may meet together in that world above, Where trouble shall cease and harmony shall abound. --Farewell Anthem.
