Product Notes

Growing up in Georgia, I was exposed to a large spectrum of music. My father grew up in a farming family and entertainment was simple, country music (the Grand Ole Opry) and hymns. My mother was from Atlanta her musical choices were more urban, swing, and the big bands of her era, but again the spiritual side. She made sure there was music in the house. The first instrument in our family was a piano; then I got a ukulele, followed by a guitar. I couldn't read music, but I could create and that was fine with me. As long as I was involved in a creative music process, I was happiest. Music theory was simple. It was easier for me to write a song than learn one, and performing and production was icing on the cake. As I grew older, the urge to perform led me into bands with high school buddies. A standard had been set in Albany Georgia. Ray Charles was born in the area, Ray Stevens started his musical career there, and the great Jazz guitarist Russell Malone honed his skills there. Playing in cover bands was fun and I made money doing it, but I felt the need to create and play my own music. This led me to Nashville, Tennessee songwriters capital of the world. I came to Nashville with some songs, and I have written many more and performed them. People began asking me if I had a CD; so picking the most requested songs of my repetoire, I produced my first albumn. EVERYBODY I KNOW. I began the project by contacting Jim Roberts, drummer and percussionist for the group Capetown, and also owner of Kalimba studio in Nashville. Earlier through Jim I got a chance to meet Shane Theriot, guitarist for Aaron Neville and also his own band, the Grease Factor. I knew he was going to bring that something special, that southern vibe that I was looking for. The other musicians on the project are Dale Armstrong (session drummer). Debi Champion (session vocalist). Dan Immel (session bass player and the group Daybreak). Jim Roberts (session percussion and the group Capetown). Phil Wolfe (session musician: keyboards, harmonica, guitar and the group Capetown). What these musicians and vocalist brought to the table are exactly what I had envisioned, music that is southern in scope, from the mountains to the shore and in-between. It's country, it's soulful, it's the blues, but most of all spiritual, and for this I thank God. Tom Ussery A world with music is well rounded. 2009 TU.
