Beyond the Niche
Under the Radar delivers a spirited mix of newgrass/bluegrass, folk, blues, country, & swing. Combining the talents of four of northern California's best musicians. Band leader Kevin Russell and mandolin player Layne Bowen were both original members of the Mordern Hicks. They have each played in a number of other popular Sonoma County bands over the years. Ted Dutcher a veteran of numerous band including HiJinks and Terra Nova, joined Kevin and Layne in Modern Hicks along the way. Michael Capella started his career as a pedal steel player (Joe Ricthie, Hotspur) and has been playing dobro with Late Harvest the last five years. 'Some hot pickin' and good singing, as well as a variety in styles. Kevin & Michael are great singers and the band does great harmonies throughout. All in all, a job well done. Under The Radar has definitely carved out it's own 'Niche,' and who knows, thanks to the success of this CD, the band might have to change it's name to 'Above The Radar'...' -Larry Carlin 'It always amazes me that Kevin Russell is still self-produced. Kevin's technique in a variety of styles is always exciting, his selection of songs exceptional, his vocals very smooth and evocative, instrumental work and line-up of musicians very much equal to the diversity of material he performs. Each CD is a gem, better than the previous, and leaving the listener anxiously awaiting the next. Kevin is one commanding talent; that he hasn't yet been picked up by a big label by now is unthinkable.' -Joe Falletta, Bluegrass Now ?May 23, 2005.
