Walter E.L. Scrutchings, Walter E.L. Scrutchings is a product of the "windy" city Chicago, IL. He was born on June 1, 1960 to Rev. W.L. and Charlene Scrutchings. Walter accepted Jesus at an early age and was baptized at the age of 12 at the Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church of Chicago, IL. By the Rev. Royce D. Cornelius. Rev. W.L. Scrutchings greatly supported and nurtured the talent seen in each of his children and was able to provide Marion, Ophelia and young Walter piano lessons at a local church. Although Walter was only 5 when he started formal lessons, his father saw to it that Walter experienced other musical influences that would aide and enhance the growth, development and musical knowledge of his son. Walter was fortunate to study music from numerous Chicago area musical legends such as: the late Professor Willie Webb, who served as the musician for the renowned Roberta Martin Singers; the late Mr. David Webb and Mr. Robert Townsend and Dr. Paul Schoenfeld. He also studied music during his youth at Chicago's DePaul University School of Music and The Lyon Healy School of Music located in downtown Chicago. Walter is a graduate of the Hyde Park Career Academy High School under the musical tutelage of Mr. G. George. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio and a Master of Education degree from Malone College in Canton, Ohio. His emphasis and concentration is in the area of Educational Administration and Curriculum Development. Walter Scrutchings currently serves as a music director for the Akron Public Schools, in Akron Ohio. He is a musician, writer and member of the faculty for the Midwest Conference of Christian Artist and the Gospel Music Workshop of America National Convention (GMWA). Walter is a registered member of Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), The Harry Fox Agency, and the Music Educators National Conference. Walter currently serves as the Chairman of the Men\'s Division of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, INC. The Late Rev. James Cleveland is the founder. Bishop Albert L. Jamison is Chairman of the Board of Directors. Walter has been blessed to serve others through his inspired writings and musicianship. He has worked with various recording artist such as: the late Rev. James Cleveland of Los Angeles, California; The Rev. Clay Evans of Chicago, IL; The Swanee Quintet of Augusta, Georgia; GMWA National Mass Choir; GMWA Men's Choir; Clifford F. V. Smith of Chicago, IL; Elvin Dent and The United Voices of Praise of Augusta, Georgia; James Bignon of Atlanta, Georgia; Ron Rucker and the Japan Chapter of the GMWA; Raymond W. Hinton and the Voices of Praise of Akron, Ohio; Billy Preston of Los Angeles California; Dr. Donna Cox and The University of Dayton Ebony Heritage Singers; Bishop Andre S. Woods of Detroit Michigan; Dr. Errol Wayne Evans and the Gary City-wide Mass Choir; The St. Louis Progressive Mass Choir; The Progressive National Baptist Convention; The National Baptist Congress; The Midwest Conference of Christian Artist; Carlton L. Fellows and Total Praise Music; The Cleveland Area Men of Song Mass Choir; The Akron City Family Mass Choir and a plethora of cities, churches, groups, choirs, soloists and conventions throughout the United States, Japan and the Caribbean. In 1978 Walter Scrutchings introduced and started developing his own publishing company, "Scrutchings Music Publishing" which he has been blessed to use as a vehicle to publish and distribute nearly 300 personal and contracted compositions. As an accomplished publisher and musician Walter has been able to minister to God's people through S.A.T.B. and orchestral scoring, arranging and producing live recording sessions, studio sessions, concerts, workshops, and lectures. Walter is also known for his ability to help assist churches, choirs, groups and numerous music organizations with conflict resolution. To this date Walter is a musician who is highly sought after, both nationally and internationally to share his knowledge of ministry, administration, music performance and education. Since July of 1999, Walter Scrutchings has been the elated husband to Joy McNeal Scrutchings who is also an accomplished musician. Through this union, God has blessed them with 4 wonderful children, Serrin Joy, Walter Jr., Lynette Marie and Lydia Cylene. He and his wife act as a team serving as music directors for the Mt. Zion UCC Church in Cleveland, Ohio where Rev. Paul H. Sadler is the pastor. Within the Scrutchings home the music tradition continues to be passed on to their children. Walter E.L.
